Ways to Acquire Inventorial Equipment

Summary: Find out how you can acquire equipment for your department.

Inventorial Equipment refers to items that must be tracked through UCSC's property and financial systems. For more information on equipment, please see Inventorial Equipment Overview & Guidelines.

You can acquire inventorial equipment using several methods and from many sources. But, no matter how you acquire the equipment, you must record and track it through UCSC's property and financial systems.

• Purchase - You can purchase inventorial equipment on a "regular" Banner purchase order. See How to Buy Inventorial Equipment.
• Receive Equipment as a Gift (donation) - Outside sources such as manufacturers and philanthropic organizations often donate equipment to UCSC. See How to Handle Equipment Acquired as a Gift (Donation).
• Receive Equipment as a Loan - Your department may receive equipment on loan from other departments, campuses, or outside agencies. See How to Handle Equipment Acquired as a Loan (from another UCSC department or UC campus) or How to Handle Equipment Acquired as a Loan (from an outside party).
• Fabrication - When you manufacture something and its component parts result in an item that has a value of $5000 or more, can stand alone and has a useful life of one year or more, you have acquired a piece of inventorial equipment. See How to Handle Fabrications.
